 Prof Tommy Wiedmann from the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNSW, breaks down some of the key challenges behind the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 11.

This is an educational video for children to learn about the eleventh of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainable cities and communities. Sustainability is about meeting the needs of people today while growing the economy without compromising the needs of future generations and endangering the environment.

Today, the majority of people on the planet reside in urban areas. Six out of ten people are expected to live in cities by 2030. Cities provide more effective economies of scale on many levels, including the supply of commodities, services, and transportation, despite the many planning obstacles. Cities may become hubs for innovation and growth as well as forces behind sustainable development if they have good, risk-informed planning and administration.
